Common opal with a coating of white clay from Multnomah County on a base of Columbia River Basalt from Sherman County.

Nodules of green opal form in openings in the rubbly top of one of the many Columbia River Basalt flows that make up the Portland Hills. Every few years a new one weathers out and ends up in a roadside ditch. With it's white coating, this irregular nodule took on the form of a torso, reminiscent of a fragment of an ancient marble sculpture.
